As promised, here’s my post about all the things I did on International Crochet Day
First thing I did (after showering and eating breakfast obviously) was finish another Christmas gift! This one for my brother. I used Lion Brand’s pattern last year but it turned out too big. This year I just kind of winged it and it’s perfect size this time around. I used Lion Brand’s principle but I’m still calling it Brother’s Beanie.
Then I moved onto my next project to finish, a baby hat. I had made the base part of the hat the night before and had to make the bow and attach it that morning. Turned out lovely if I say so myself. I used Charmed by Ewe’s Wrapped with Love Hat pattern. I couldn’t meet her gauge so I just came up with my own hdc basic beanie pattern. I would have made one at some point anyways so why not now? I did use her bow pattern which was simple and turned out adorable! This one is going to my cousin D and his wife S. I believe they’re the ones due in January and they’re definitely having a girl. I plan to make a third and final hat for them soon.
I decided to start on another baby hat next. This one for another cousin. C. He and his girlfriend are having their first baby next month and I totally forgot!! Thankfully I already have a Minnie Mouse hat on hand (haven’t shown you guys that yet because it was a test for Leah that I started during the dreaded month of July and never finished til weeks later). I plan on making them a hat but this one was commissioned by my Aunt M (my most loving and faithful customer) for her second granddaughter. Yep, they’re having a girl too. I won’t tell you what the hat will look like but I’ll post this little teaser here. I used Thu Nguyen’s pattern. It worked up rather nicely I think.
I then spent the rest of the day working on one project. Can you guess? ….. Eden’s granny square blanket. FINALLY I can say that ALL 20 squares are sewn together!! ::happy dance:: That thing was a pain in my butt (literally) and I am NOT looking forward to sewing all mine together. I might look into another way to join them all. I also then started on the border. I’m about 1.5 rounds into that. This page HERE shows all the blog posts with all different square patterns. You can also find it by searching for LW4132 on their website. There should be a giant pdf that has all the patterns put together. Oh yea, the border will be blue
And then today when I got the mail, I had a package. Cool I thought. Opened it up and it was the fabulous yarn I won thanks to The Philosopher’s Wife. The yarn is from Never Enough Thyme. The color is called Apple Picking and it is a 75% SW Merino 25% Nylon fingering yarn. I’ve never worked with Merino or a fingering weight yarn so I’m pretty excited. Something else to make for myself when I have enough time to. Because do you remember that awesome Yarn Baby yarn I won a while back? Still haven’t used it yet. Maybe after Christmas. Hopefully.
On The Hook:
- Test for CTbL
- Eden’s Blanket
- Christmas gifts (Mom first)
- Baby things
There’s been some time between posts. Reasons. I haven’t finished items that I could blog about and nothing new has happened. Finished items I can’t blog about?! How could that be? That’s because I test for Creative Threads by Leah and don’t want to post photos/info about upcoming patterns for sale without her permission. With that being said, there have been a few finished tests. All Who-ish. I was really excited to work and keep working on those. They’re making great presents for some little Who fans that I know.
But I do have a finished item I can share! It’s my first complete Christmas present!! I actually finished it the other day but it’s been raining almost nonstop since Sunday and I haven’t been able to get a good picture. I made it using some of that fabulous yarn I picked up on clearance a few weeks back. I’m calling it the Hunter’s Chunky Cap. It’s made with chunky yarn, it’s going to a hunter, and I like the alliteration of the two C’s.
Look how cool it looks! Why did I do it two toned like that and not striped? Because silly me only bought one skein of Dad’s Scarf and when I went back for more a few days later there wasn’t any more. Thankfully at the bottom of the bin there was one Black in the same type of yarn so I was able to finish it with ease. Even though I made a rookie mistake in not buying enough yarn, it totally worked out and looks totally planned and awesome! At least I think so anyways. And don’t worry if it looks huge. The head is only 21 inches (already smaller than an average male head) but Pap’s head is also 24 inches. So it’s supposed to look big.
I currently have 6 projects on my hook. Crazy right. Well one’s technically not on the hook because I’m in the middle of sewing all the squares together for Eden’s blanket! First I sewed them in rows and now I’m working on sewing the rows together. I have two of them together and three more to go. I’m really not enjoying this because to keep the rows flat I have to sit awkwardly at my table. Going to look into other ways to join squares together for my blanket. I have three tests for Leah. One I ran out of requested yarn, second and third are coming along nicely. Then I have the nativity for Monica (slow going because of sewing all the parts together). Last night I started the hat for my brother Joe. The one I made his last year turned out really big so I’m making him a replacement.
Non Crochet news!! I planned to take a visit home in October for my mom’s and sister’s birthdays (they’re back to back). I’m pushing up my visit by a month and going down in a few weeks instead. Why would you do that if you had your whole trip planned? Good question! Because my grandparents are coming in from Arizona!!!!! I haven’t seen them since my cousin got married in October 2011! They plan to only be in a week but since I have other family to see I’m going to be there for two. I’m super super hoping to have all if not most of my Christmas presents finished to take with me so I won’t have to mail them. I’m literally working my fingers to the bone trying to get everything done. I also don’t know how I’m going to fit a blanket with all the gifts AND two weeks worth of clothes in one suitcase because I’m taking the train. I’ll figure it out. Maybe.
Last Friday night Luke and I went to see the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. If you haven’t figured out by now we’re a little bit on the nerdy side, me more so than him. It was amazing you should go see it! Anyways, we went to Walmart afterwards (like always) and I saw this
I couldn’t believe my eyes!! Yarn NEVER goes on clearance at my Walmart! I snagged up a couple of skeins because I just couldn’t pass up the deals. I grabbed two skeins of Bernat Softee Chunky in Dad’s Scarf and Hot Pink (Luke kind of forced me on this one because I never make anything for myself and it would go well with that gray, cream, and soft pink cowl I’m planning to make). And one skein of Lion Brand Hometown USA in New York White. Plan to make this into some baby hats for the cousins.
And I’ve already used two of them to make a Christmas present for Pap!! First fully completed Christmas gift!! Woot Woot!! I used Bernat’s Softee Chunky in Dad’s Scarf and Black to make a hat. I know, not originally what I was going to make him. But I couldn’t pass up the gray, black, and green combo of Dad’s Scarf (he’s a big hunter). I decided on the hat because he’s got a giant head (I measured, 24 inch circumference!!) and has problems finding hats to fit. It’s just a plain styled dc beanie. Going off of Luke’s head it’s the perfect length but next time I see Pap I’m going to take another measurement to make fully certain it’s the right length before finishing off. That’s why I don’t have pictures yet. The top half is made using Dad’s Scarf and the last three rows are made using the Black. Why did I choose this you ask? Because I ran out of Dad’s Scarf half way through and there was only Black left in the carts when I went back to get more on Tuesday. Still looks pretty awesome. Maybe I’ll use the left over Black for more baby hats 🙂
Yesterday I finally finished the last square for Eden’s blanket!!
That thing in the middle is a ruler to give you something for scale. All of the orange squares are a normal Granny Square. Each blue one is a different stitch pattern. I think it looks pretty neat. Remember I’m making myself the same blanket but all in Sage green. I still need to do 9 of my Granny Squares. But for Eden’s all I have left is to attach them all and crochet a border. I’m not sure if I want to go granny style or leave it kind of plain like.
Getting the mail today I saw a package had arrived!
These bad boys were sitting in my mailbox just waiting for me to open them!! They can be found HERE. As most of the Amazon reviews said, yes the plastic cords do smell something foul. But I’m sure spending the day outside in the sun will help with that. I can’t wait to use them!! I’m hoping to use them for a Christmas present 🙂
Oh I started that test for CTbL last night. I’m only 6 rows in and it’s taken me a little while. I need to make some bobbins now before I can continue though. So I’m going to go get started on those!!
On the Hook:
- Bobbins and Test for CTbL
- Baby girl hats for D
- Giant pile for Christmas
Ok. I know I haven’t posted in over a month. There’s a few reasons for that.
1. I haven’t really done too much crocheting.
2. That’s because I went camping over the 4th of July weekend.
3. There was a death in the family and I didn’t feel like doing much of anything.
So all of July was spent with family, eating bad (for you) foods, boozing, and not really paying attention to anything of importance. Luke and I still went on our mini vaca to visit a friend and went to the fair. Saw my first concert ever!! Florida Georgia Line! They were pretty awesome. Then football camp started, it was Luke’s birthday, etc. But I think I’m ready to get back to crocheting now.
I gave that adorable Frozen hat to the lucky birthday girl a few weeks ago. I have a picture of her wearing it somewhere, I’ll post it when I find it.
I found out two of my cousins are having babies!! One (C) is having her first in December and she’s not finding out the gender. The other (D) is having his second in January and they should find out by the end of the month. I’ve already started on C’s things since they have to be gender neutral. She asked for one of those cute baby bear hats, so I stuck with an animal theme. I’ve made that along with a spiked dinosaur hat and a red and white baseball brimmed hat since her and her husband love the Phillies. I’ll wait to find out what D is having before making his things. I do know that I plan on making something Flyers related. Maybe a black, orange, and white striped hat? Something to just get the point across.
As far as Christmas presents are going, I’m 1.5 squares away from finishing Eden’s blanket before sewing them together and adding a boarder. They look really nice though. (I’ve farther behind on mine) I’ve made the bodies and one head to the shepherds for Monica. And that’s about all I’ve done so far. Joe’s getting a new hat because the one I made last year was too big. Not sure what I’m making Marissa or my mom yet. I think I’m going to make a Saint Francis doll for Pap. Erin’s probably getting a pillow (she knows that already). And I haven’t made ANY headway on Luke’s 300 helmet so he’s suggested making a Colossus doll since I have Allison Hoffman’s book AmiguruME that I haven’t used yet. I also have a commission that I’m hoping to have done by Christmas as well. Won’t be getting the yarn for that for another two weeks so I’m gonna bust my butt here.
Also I’m doing a new test for Creative Threads by Leah. I’m not sure what all I can say so I won’t say anything. Except that I couldn’t refuse since I live in western pa 🙂
Hoping to have lots of finished projects and pictures soon!!
As you have noticed, there was another big gap in my posts. We sent our computer away again to get some fancy updates and things that it needed. But it’s back for good!! YAY!! With that being said, I have a few updates.
I’ve still been working on the Clearfield helmets. I believe I have gotten all the sizes correct. Just need to add the center stripes on each size and the patterns are finished! Then I’ll move onto Curwensville’s helmets.
I made a sale!! One of Luke’s cousins saw a Queen Elsa from the movie Frozen styled hat on the internet and asked if I could make one for her daughter. Of course I said yes! Since she really wanted the one she found I gave in and bought it rather than trying my best to make one like it, that and I had never done hair before and didn’t want to mess it up. So the pattern for one I made can be found HERE for sale on Etsy. It was really simple and easy to follow. The only change I made was I used my own beanie pattern because there was no gauge or finished measurements for the sizes. Didn’t bother me any because I wanted the pattern for the crown (which I easily could have made myself it was that easy) and the hair. It’s super adorable and pictures will be posted when it’s not raining for a week straight so that I can get some good light.
I have been named a tester for a great gal named Leah of Creative Threads by Leah!! It’s pretty exciting actually. I started earlier this week by making some amazingly adorable Doctor Who drink sleeves. I’ll post pictures when the patterns are released, which will be soon I think, only because I’m not entirely sure when I’m allowed to post them to the public. So better save than sorry right? Right.
I’ve also started on some Christmas presents! I know, it’s still June right? Well if I’m making my own patterns and testing now then I definitely need to start cracking on Christmas. As you know I’m still working on that blanket for my sister. I’m only two squares behind thanks to the computer not being here but since it’s back I’ll be able to print out the patterns and hopefully catch up before the tutorials for how to sew them all together. I also started making Luke’s mom’s present. I’m not sure if she reads this but it doesn’t matter because she knows what she’s getting. It’s more pieces to what I gave her last year. Only she doesn’t know what order she’s getting them but she should. Together everything will make a nativity scene. She already has Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus. Wonder what she’ll get this year……
Oh and I’m teaching myself Tunisian today!! It’s going pretty well but I can’t figure out how to stop it from curling. I might have to learn to block! :0 gasp!
